چکیده

Cellulose, chitin and chitosan are the most abundant biopolymer on earth and constitute an important class of biodegradable materials. The decomposition of three major biopolymers viz. chitin, chitosan and cellulose are studied using simultaneous thermal analysis i.e. thermogravimetry/differential thermal analyzer (TG/DTA). Thermal analysis is performed from ambient temperature to 700 °C in a flowing nitrogen medium at four different linear heating rates i.e. 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 °C min. Thermal stability order of the three biopolymers based on TG followed the order: cellulose > chitin > chitosan. Non-isothermal multiple heating rate model free methods Ozawa-Flynn-Wall (O-F-W), Kissinger, Friedman and modified CoatsRedfern methods are used to calculate degradation activation energy of the biopolymers. The reaction mechanism based on activation energy calculation at different conversions has been proposed.

Biopolymer Modifications for Biomedical Applications

Chitosan is typically obtained by deacetylation of chitin under alkaline conditions, which is one of the most abundant organic materials, being second only to cellulose in the amount produced annually by biosynthesis. Chitosan is a linear polysaccharide, composed of glucosamine and Nacetyl glucosamine units linked by (1–4) glycoside bonds. The content of glucosamine is called the degree of deac...

Chemistry and applications of polysaccharide solutions in strong electrolytes/dipolar aprotic solvents: an overview.

Biopolymers and their derivatives are being actively investigated as substitutes for petroleum-based polymers. This has generated an intense interest in investigating new solvents, in particular for cellulose, chitin/chitosan, and starch. This overview focuses on recent advances in the dissolution and derivatization of these polysaccharides in solutions of strong electrolytes in dipolar aprotic...

Chitosan, the Marine Functional Food, Is a Potent Adsorbent of Humic Acid

Chitosan is prepared by the deacetylation of chitin, the second-most abundant biopolymer in nature, and has applicability in the removal of dyes, heavy metals and radioactive waste for pollution control. In weight-reduction remedies, chitosan is used to form hydrogels with lipids and to depress the intestinal absorption of lipids. In this study, an experimental method was implemented to simulat...

Catalytic Role of Ionic Liquids for Dissolution and Degradation of Biomacromolecules

Natural biomacromolecules constitute a diverse feedstock, including carbohydrate-based polysaccharides (cellulose, hemicellulose, starch, agarose, and Konjac glucomannan) together with lignin — extracted mainly from biomass — and other protein based polymers, namely keratin, chitin, chitosan, and silk fibroin. The complex and heterogeneous chemical structure of biomacromolecules makes them diff...

Chitooligosaccharide and Its Derivatives: Preparation and Biological Applications

Chitin is a natural polysaccharide of major importance. This biopolymer is synthesized by an enormous number of living organisms; considering the amount of chitin produced annually in the world, it is the most abundant polymer after cellulose. The most important derivative of chitin is chitosan, obtained by partial deacetylation of chitin under alkaline conditions or by enzymatic hydrolysis. Ch...
